How to Reduce Draft from Windows

reduce draft from windows

If you feel like you have a problem with drafty windows, it’s time to do something about it. It usually comes from faulty windows, which is why we are going to give you several ways that should help you reduce the problem to the bare minimum or eliminate it.

We can’t know your specific situation, so we advise you to try out the methods that seem to be related to your particular problem and financial situation.

Use window film

This method is very easy, as all you need to do is buy the film, heat it, seal the areas where the draft is coming from, and you’re done.

If the windows are large, then you should get someone to help you out, as that will make the whole process even easier.

Buy insulated curtains

Insulated curtains are a great way to deal with the draft, but they tend to cost more than other methods here.

The curtains need to be closed to be truly effective. This means you’ll have no sunlight. However, this is very beneficial during the summer, as insulated curtains keep the sun’s heat from coming in.

Insulate windows with sash weights

This method requires a bit of work, but it can do wonders against your draft problems.

Before you begin, you need to remove all the molding from around the window. Then you need to cut strips of foil-faced rigid foam insulation to fill the area between the side jamb and drywall. Additionally, you need to spray polyurethane foam sealant into the spaces at the top and bottom of the window jamb.

After that, you need to use strips of foil-faced insulation once again alongside the side jambs on both sides. Fill the space that’s left between the strips and the wall with adhesive-backed foil tape. After that, all that’s left is to replace the molding.

Buy interior storm stoppers

Insert interior storm stoppers on the inside of the window. They are custom-made to fit your specific window and can significantly increase insulation.

The good thing about them is that they are not too expensive and don’t alter the look of your window.

Add a new layer of caulk

The caulking on windows tends to degrade over time. Part of it can tear or peel away. That’s why it’s good to buy a tube of exterior caulking and re-caulk the areas around the window. Poor caulking causes drafts. You shouldn’t have any problems with drafts If your windows are not damaged.
