Window Screen Replacement

window screen replacement

Sometimes window screens are beyond minor repair. That’s when window screen replacement becomes necessary.

As time passes and window screens get older, they become damaged from wear and tear. When that happens, most people usually opt for fixing them. They call the professionals, and they get it done in no time. It usually takes no more than a little bit of cleaning and polishing.

If this is the case with you, or you’re not sure if you should replace your window screens, this article can help you. Here we’ll answer all the common questions people have and tell you everything you need to know about window screen replacement.

How do you replace a screen on a window?

It doesn’t matter if the window screen is made from vinyl, metal, or wood. It’s always possible to replace them if the need arises.

To do this properly, you’ll need to use a utility knife and a flat-head screwdriver. Additionally, you’ll have to purchase the following materials:

  • Screen roller
  • Duct tape
  • Spline

The first step involves removing the old window screen. You can use either one of the two tools we mentioned to remove the screen spline from the frame. Then you need to clean the frame. Once you’re done cleaning, you can start preparing the new screen.

You can start by placing the new material, but make sure that it’s some two inches wider than the frame

Roll the screen over the frame and tape it over the ends. Once you have laid out your new screen and made sure it fits nicely, align the spline along the channel of the frame and press the screen into the channel by pressing down on the spline. You can use a tool to complete this, such as a screwdriver, but you should be able to get away with using just your thumb. Make sure it’s tight, and then you can cut off the remaining screen that’s sticking out over the edges.

Do window screens come in standard sizes?

It’s one of the few general questions people have, and the answer is usually yes. However, you can always get custom window screens.

If you’re going to do this, it’s important that you measure the size of your existing window screen correctly, or the new one won’t fit in properly. You can do it yourself:

  • Measure the shortest side first and make sure it’s as accurate to 1/16 of an inch.
  • Measure the longest side, and again, make sure it’s to the closest 1/16 inch.
  • Measure the frame’s thickness.

If you’re unsure how to do all of this, you can always contact the professionals for some help.

How much does it cost to replace a window screen?

Naturally, the cheapest option is the DIY one. However, there’s a lot that you need to buy, and if you don’t do it right, the screen won’t fit properly. Even if the screen doesn’t fit by a quarter of an inch, you’ll have problems later on.

The cost of this method is usually between $100 and $200.

However, it’s best to get professional help to ensure the right fit. Window screen replacement is never expensive, so it stands to reason that this is your best option.

The typical cost of this service varies, depending on your location and the material being used. The price range can be anywhere between $132 and $453. The national average is around $290.
