How to Maintain Your House Siding

how to maintain your vinyl siding

Now that you’ve decided on the material for your house siding (hopefully, you have?), it’s time you learn a bit more about ways to maintain it and keep it “in good health.” Regardless of what type of siding you have, it’s vital that you clean it regularly. Doing this on a regular basis means once or twice a year.

Cleaning your siding is just one of many essential home maintenance projects. In general, this shouldn’t take you too much time or effort. If you’ve got a big house, the whole process can be completed over the weekend. You can even make a family thing out of it: gather your family members or your super close neighbors and get right on it! Once everything’s sorted out, fire up the barbecue to celebrate your clean siding! Any excuse to have some barbeque, right?

Ok, so – here’s what you should do:

Cleaning all types of siding

Before you start with a thorough cleaning session, make sure to walk around your house to check for any damages and cracks. If there are any issues, repair them before you begin cleaning. Otherwise, the cost may become even more severe.

You can use a hose if you want to finish the cleaning faster, but using a bucket of warm, soapy water may work more effectively. You can add half a cup of TSP to 1 gallon of water. To work more efficiently, divide the siding surface into 10-foot sections and brush it thoroughly from bottom to top while rinsing every so often.

Vinyl siding maintenance

Luckily, vinyl siding requires little maintenance given its durability. Cleaning it once or twice a year is the most crucial aspect of this material care. However, cracks and damages can happen, especially during powerful storms, so make sure to check your house for any cracks every once in a while, and fix damages as soon as possible.

Wood siding maintenance

Wood siding requires proper treatment every 4-6 years. If you live in a place where there’s plenty of storms, hail, and snow, your wood siding may need treatment more frequently. Like with vinyl siding, make sure to walk around your house and inspect it thoroughly every once in a while to check for cracks and damages. If you find some, repair them as quickly as you can.

Fiber cement siding maintenance

Unlike vinyl, fiber cement siding needs repainting every ten years or so. Depending on the type of fiber cement, you’ll have to choose a specific kind of paint as well. When it comes to cleaning it, a high-pressure hose is more than enough. However, it’s always best to consult the manufacturer’s recommendations as some types of fiber cement siding require low-pressure cleaning, softer brush, etc.
